One and Half month left, looking back my 2013 with MANNAM and Hope for Peace

How was your 2013? It's 13th, November, 2013. One and half month are left. If you can choose some keywords for summarizing your year, which words will you choose? I want to pick two words, 'MANNAM' and 'Peace.' Exactly saying, there are more some sub-keywords related to them, such as 'MIYC' and 'The Peace.'

The war in the world haven't been stopped yet. The world is still in war, and many people suffer from it. It is caused by separation and non-tolerance among different political parties, different sexes, different cultures, different nationalities, and different religions. I have heard and seen many cases that is not in peace this year, discussing with friends from all over the world in The Peace talk concert programs. Our branch MANNAM Busan North started in January, and soon 11th concert is coming.

Doing discussions, I found that all people have hope for peace and they want peace in their life, country, family, and friends. The second part was usually discussion time and we discuss about how we make peace. Of course, depending on the topic, solutions were various, however, there was always one basic thing in all solutions. It's 'Understanding.'

Understanding does not happen suddenly. It can be possible when we gather, discuss, and cooperate through creating a network. This year, MANNAM and other youth organizations made a network named MANNAM International Youth Coalition. One of the peace projects was the peace walk, 10km in their shoe with POP (Pledge of Peace) in April.

In May,  All MANNAM members were also invited to participate in the event. Especially, MIYC youth representatives attended and walked together, too. It was impressive for me to see that about more than 20,000 people gathered and walked for peace together. Peace leader Mr.Lee announced the Declaration of World Peace and cry '만세! (Man-sae, a word used in Korea and China, like 'Hurruh.') Here are some parts of the declaration:

We call on the heads of state of every country to sign an international agreement - a commitment to bringing all wars to an end. We ask them to do this from a spirit of deepseated love for the people of their country.
We call on all youth to unite in an effort to stop wars and pursue the restoration of peace by agreeing not to fight one another. For World Peace to become a reality, this is the duty of all youth, everywhere. The only way to stop the fighting and pointless, tragic deaths, is to stop fighting. Nobody can ask for anything greater than this, and know now that your efforts - the efforts of the young people of the world today in pursuit of peace - will remain as a never fading light of life for all future generations.
Furthermore, we call on every person, every man, woman, and child in the world, to pick up the mantle of peace. In whatever way you can, we ask that you work t further the cause of world peace and restoration, making it a reality in your direct environments.
Lastly, we call on the media to port responsibly and promote a message of peace to the world.

After walking together in this event in May, We were connected much more strongly.
I expect the MANNAM INTL to make many great projects next year, looking forward to seeing youth people in MANNAM and all youth organizations all over the world work together.

This year, I found hope for peace, and now I believe my hope for peace is not unrealistic one, and hope world peace to be achieved and want to witness it is realized in my life. There is no peace yet in the world, but I was and am happy to be with MANNAM, because there is hope and MANNAM made me believe it can be possible.

All youth, Let's do peace!

MANNAM Volunteer Association The PEACE Talk Concert #7: Human Rights (Summary of Speech)

HUMAN RIGHTS

HUMAN RIGHTS are the rights that all people have by virtue of being human beings. Human Rights are derived from the inherent dignity of the human person and are defined internationally, nationally and locally by various law making bodies. All of the people and even governments from all over the world may accept to respect other’s Rights, but does it really happen in our life days? The answer is… NO! Man has used to change the law based on his benefits! In this discussion, we are looking for what causes people and governments not respecting Human Rights and what may prevent them not to do that. Everyone is welcome to talk and discuss and share ideas! -Farnaz

Summary of Speech: MANNAM The PEACE #6: Gender Discrimination

Gender Discrimination

Gender (or sex) discrimination occurs when a person is subjected to different or unequal treatment ("discrimination") in any number of situations, when that treatment is based on the person's gender. Gender discrimination happens because people think that men are better than women. Parents start discrimination before birth of child. In most case they expect boys for economic and social safety in their future life. It seems obvious that women would want to change the system, but men are less likely to want to give up their positions of power

Gender discrimination has started with the initialization of human civilization. As civilization spreads, discrimination increases as well. In every sector of modern society, aspects of discrimination we can find. It may vary region to region, country to country as well as community to community. The ultimate effect of gender discrimination is crucial on a family as well as society. Unhappily, mental disorders often occur in the discriminated persons.

Government regulations certainly help the situation. Proper education in family and in school can help one to change the attitude to gender discrimination. Media can play in letting situation improved by not representing stereotype to all kinds of gender. Nowadays the situations are changing rapidly. Women have proved that they are capable of doing work like man. I like to see the world where men and women cooperate beyond gender discrimination. - Shahin

Summary of Speech: MANNAM The PEACE #5: Poverty

Poverty

Generally, people regard poverty as lack of money or goods. What do you think about it? Of course, it’s true. That’s why governments, organizations, and each person try to help the poor people. But, I want to talk another one, too. Who is poor? My opinion might be different a little from general thoughts. What I think is that everyone is poor.

So, why is everyone poor? There are two reasons of poverty. First, it depends on the problem of thinking. If you think you are poor, you are poor. If you think you are not poor, you are not poor. Secondly, poverty is caused from lack of something. As I said before, that something doesn’t mean only the finance. I mean, lack of anything. You may lack of money, you may lack of power, and you may lack of social support. It’s not just about goods.

According to my view, there are a couple of solutions for poverty. First, we need to change our thinking about poverty. It’s not limited to certain classes. Then, we need share money, knowledge, power, love, and anything which you have that we can share with others. This issue, which world face, is serious and difficult one, but we can try to end poverty of world and it can begin from how we are approaching that problem. What is your opinion about poverty and solutions?

Hope we will discuss about solutions more today.  - Maksudur Rahman

After MANNAM The PEACE #4. Terrorism : What Can We Do?

Hugo, a Mexican-American friend from MANNAM Busan North, made a presentation about Terrorism at the 4th MANNAM The PEACE talk concert last Saturday, 27th, April. Monthly talk concert 'The PEACE', which had started with the start of 2013, on January, this time was the 4th talk. We listened to the speeches about ‘My War and My Peace,’ ‘Discrimination,’ and ‘Culture of Violence.’ Then, the 4th theme was ‘Terrorism.’

His speech was divided into 5 parts:

  1. Definition: What is terrorism?
  2. Reasons: Why do they do it?
  3. Goals: What do they wish to accomplish?
  4. Effects: How governments and people react?
  5. Solutions: What can we do?
And, this time, after the presentation, many questions were asked to the presenter. 'Terrorism' is very sensitive and controversial issue and there can be many perspectives for this problem. As members who was preparing this 4th talk also expected, people discussed very actively to make the time for part 1 longer than we planned. Even before the concert, there was discussion on facebook, too. However, we did not fight, but just share and listen to others. In part 2, we tried to find further solutions which we can do and share each solution to the panels. Yellow papers in the right picture are the papers on which people write solutions. In next posts, will share them :)

Actually, there was a big discussion and people wanted to talk more and more, we were running short of time!!! 33 friends from Ethiopia, Russia, Mexico, China, Sri Lankar, Ukraine, Bangladesh, Nepal, Iran, Pakistan, Canada, and Korea talked about the issue which threats world peace worrying it seriously, and expressed their opinions trying to find further solutions to help to decrease these acts of terror and fear of people from very specific solutions to comprehensive ones. Each person comes from the countries which experienced wars, or are in war or other problem which people don't need to experience, and now, we are talking now. No more fight or war, but now conversation starts. How amazing! What I was touched is that people who have all different nationalities can be one, worrying the earth and thinking about world peace.

MANNAM International Volunteer Association, where many youth from all over the world come together and exchange their cultures with pure volunteerism and we are really enjoying it! Summary of Speech: MANNAM The PEACE #4: Terrorism

Summary

In this presentation we will discuss the topic of terrorism. We will focus on four key areas; causes of terrorist actions, goals of terrorist actions, effects of terrorist actions, and finally possible solutions to decreasing terrorist activity. Terrorism is generally accept as violent acts carried out in disregard, or at times intentional aimed, at non-combatant personnel (civilians) with the intent to coerce political groups into changing their policies. Not every act of violence is terrorism. We'll be talking about what causes people to do such acts. Some have ideological reasons while others simply do it out of selfish and personal gains. We'll also talk about their goals and expectations, some seek to change governmental policy while others do it because they wish to correct what they see as wrong. We'll talk about the effects these acts have on everyday people around the world and the impact they have on governments. We'll finally discuss a few possible solutions to these terrorists acts and finish with a group discussion searching further solutions we can follow to try to end such unnecessary acts.

The Box of 'LIKES' by MANNAM The PEACE : INTRO

Hello, everyone. Today, I want to tell how I prepare 'The PEACE' talk concert or write about it. There are some boxes of documents in the office, my room, and even in my brain.

Here are boxes I have:

Can you guess what is the Box of 'LIKES'? If you have at least once heard about Facebook or involved in it, you must know what that sign raising thumb does mean. If we find interesting pictures or news, we push that button to agree or cheer the author. I know it has some problem which many studies are finding these days. It can make our expressions to appreciate and judge something simple and shorten the speed of thinking. However, I see one of functions the button has is that I can quickly collect information which is useful and helpful for me or what stories touched my mind.

The Box of 'LIKES' in my mind and other team members' thought is the scrap books or collections of memos that inspire us and give ideas for the program, which we found when we studied or read about peace activists or programs through internet, books, movies, etc.

I has been thinking to open a page which introduces peace activists and organizations/programs from which I or other members got sources of our program, And hope many people become interested in peace campaigns and people who are trying to make peace. For MANNAM The Peace to be more developed, reading articles/books and searching other programs to come up with good ideas is needed. The box of 'LIKES' is the name given by me. In other words, it means 'bank of ideas' or 'scrap book.'

So, I will write about peace activists and their activities in the world as well as Korea. Some of them may be well-known internationally and others you haven't heard of it.

Of course, welcome that you press Google+1 and share really on your Facebook if you like posts!

[MANNAM Volunteer Association] Why are they so kind to foreigners in Korea? : Another Definition of Peace

Last year, MANNAM Volunteer Association joined WPI (World Peace Initiative) movement, and one of the campaigns was to ask people 'what do you think peace is?' then asked each of people to write their definition on a piece of paper on which just the phrase 'Peace is' was written.

At that time, I wrote "Peace is what people hope it, but what people do not believe possible." I had been facing many skeptical and cynical views to our campaign so, at the first time when I got the paper, I wrote like above. And I met many people from all over the world and saw what they wrote.

One day, a sweet girl who volunteers as a main translator in Busan North branch, Anna, talked about her view and her definition. And I was impressed and even surprised. From then, I don't care about the skeptical views (now I think I learned to tolerate them and understand there are different views among people) and feel proud of myself and MANNAM.

Her definition of peace was 'FAMILY.' She was also '외국인 (a foreigner)' when she did study in Canada over 5 years for the graduate school. Fragile, being a stranger, she felt many things. There were many difficulties living as a foreigner in a new culture, new society, and with new people. When she got in troubles, she came up with her family and really missed family. In this case, she thought that if she made friends who are like her family members who warmly accept, tolerate her as she is, her feeling can get better. That's why she supports MANNAM and MANNAM's activities, she said.

First time when some people try talk to you with kindness, you may shrink into yourself wondering why they are kind to you. However, if you experience them, and after founding a basic trust, they can be your friends. But, when you find that they are really interested in you and ready to accept and tolerate you beyond just kindness, and superficial relationships, you can open your heart more and you guys teach each other and learn from each other. Finally you will laugh with them, sad with them, empathize with them, like a family.
Then, peace can be established among people, because we became the family, though there is no biological relatedness.

That was her explanation and what she imagined and dreamed in MANNAM Volunteer Association. A real international family in this global village, as numerous news, advertisements, policies, education systems have been saying, can be truly made? I know It's difficult but disagree that's impossible!

I often call MANNAM friends '엄마(Mom), 이모(Aunt), 언니(sister), 오빠(brother), 동생(younger brother/sister), 할아버지(Grandfather).' First it was just joke, but now I use them I feel these days they are my families! And believe that in the MANNAM family, we can make it come true, World Peace !!!

Let's Make the Culture of Peace Together!!! After the 3rd MANNAM The PEACE talk concert

Let's Make the Culture of Peace Together!!!

-After the 3rd talk

In MANNAM Volunteer Association, you can meet many friends who are different from you-different language, different culture, different political views, different religion, different skin color, etc.-and it will be part of life to understand 'difference,' working together as volunteers. On 23rd, March, at Learning Square, we had the 3rd <더 PEACE>

I, as the director of <더 PEACE> talk concert, really wanted to deliver my heart, how much I grew, what I feel, and why I keep doing this. On this 3rd talk concert, we introduced new style to our part 1, using subtitle and there was no translator. The speech was given in Korean language with English subtitle.

'Culture of Violence' was the 3rd theme. It was quite difficult to deal with because there are variety views about violence. My focus of the presentation on the overall culture, rather it means our conversation/language, tradition, laws, norms, which we have in life as the way of life. And, what I wanted to say was that we can change our culture breeding violence as changing the language and behavior with positive and bright energy.

Actually, preparing this, and during the speech, I tried to put my heart into my voice,  hoping more people to join this campaign for peace, not only friends who came there but also others who would watch or hear from news, youtube, facebook, and blogs.

In part 2, we lerned Non-Violent Conversation which is one of projects to build non-violent culture. The guests were grouped into 4, then shared the current feeling and guessed friends' need. And all panels made a huge circle then discussed on the question raised during the presentation.

Actually, this month, I volunteered as a speaker to ask people to help me, help people who are in war and hope peace with their whole heart, and help MANNAM Volunteer Association. I also ask you, who is reading this article, to help me, help them, and help us. Here is the part of my speech, in the conclusion part. Wish that you can feel our heart.

When I first planned to start ‘ PEACE,’ it’s not for making me popular and famous. And, it’s not my own idea. First, a guy who are here, Seong min Choi, and Aislin, Jun Park, our photographer Sun-A are thinking about how we touch people’s mind and make them think and worry about world and peace. Also, as we feel in our community MANNAM, as we try to break the barriers beyond skin color, nationalities, and religions, how can we make people try to do that?
Now! 'Already' and 'Still' the 3rd talk concert. Maybe this looks a very small group and some people think it’s useless. However, I thought first when we started, If we practice culture of peace and love in our community, next we inform this to local communities and schools, then people in society will be interest in making world peace, and they will hear and watch this movement, also they will raise their voice together!

However, I cannot make it alone. Help me. Let’s gather your opinions discussing together, worrying together. After the 6th concert, we are going to hold a bigger peace concert or exhibition. If you have creative ideas to make people who are not interested in take part in this, please tell us!

The creation of peace culture is started from your words. Your mind and thought is expressed as the words, then, if it is shared among members in society, it can form culture. I sincerely hope your life to change our culture and make peace. Thank you for your listening!
